Spexi 2023 Review

2023 Review

After a successful seed investment round in Q4 of 2022, Spexi started 2023 with a clear goal in mind: to develop a platform that could revolutionize drone imagery capture, creating a two-sided marketplace for the most detailed aerial imagery the world has ever seen at scale. As we head into 2024, we are thrilled with the progress we have made.

Q1

The first quarter of 2023 brought growth to our development and operations team. The initial versions of the Spexi mobile app began to take shape, and we focused on strategic initiatives regarding team structure and our mid-term vision. We also made new additions to the team in Q1 and ensured that they aligned with our vision of building a successful two-sided marketplace for drone imagery.

Q2

In Q2, the first drones autonomously controlled by the Spexi Mobile App took to the sky. Our development and operations teams worked closely together to rigorously test and iterate on the app. Meanwhile, our marketing team ensured that the waitlist for interested pilots continued to grow.

Q3

The third quarter marked significant progress, as we conducted our first external Alpha test of the Spexi app with the team at Osprey Integrity in Cochrane, Alberta. Feedback from field tests, including live action testing from paid contracts with Emergency Management BC during the Okanagan wildfires, allowed for quick improvements before our second, larger alpha test in Surrey, BC.

During this Alpha test, pilots from our expanded waitlist were invited to join, and it was the first time that pilots unfamiliar with our organization were able to download the app and FLY-TO-EARN. Pilots contributed imagery covering over 48,000 acres (2x the size of San Francisco), equivalent to approximately 2,200 spexigons.

Our business development teams also attended several user conferences to build invaluable relationships with data users and develop industry partners who will guide the development of improved data delivery mechanisms.

We also met up with a few of the drone pilot users who flew in the Surrey, BC Alpha test to learn more about their experiences, what worked, what didn't, and how the overall experience went. We were floored by the positivity, and it was clear we had struck a chord with drone pilots who were able to FLY-TO-EARN!

Spexi hats for everyone!

Q4

As we wrap up Q4, we have completed a third alpha test in Kelowna, BC. This time, we partnered with the City of Kelowna, who provided valuable feedback on user integration and use cases. We have also signed LOIs and met with multiple municipalities interested in our progress, signed up over 1,100 people on the pilot waitlist, and our operations team has started testing the integration of the DJI Mini 3 and Mini 3 PRO.

And finally, of course, we finished the year with a late night Xmas party for the entire team.

The team is growing!

What a year!  We have big plans for 2024, and we can’t wait to share them with you soon.
